Recently the new Admiral's Handbook was released and in the updated rule set, combat was changed with regards to how players are able to defend against subs. We had received feedback from players that felt that subs in the game were too evasive and gave players who choose to play them more advantages than players who didn't. Originally the rule on defending against subs, if the defending player had no subs to intercept, were that you had to have a frigate, destroyer or fleet cruiser equipped with a torpedo card in order to intercept attacking subs. The new rules have changed that and now a torpedo card is no longer required. Players will be able to intercept attacking subs merely with a surface ship that has a SONAR preequipped or if that player has a SONAR defense card on their flagship. This points to the idea that ships with SONAR would have torpedo launchers already and don't require them to be equipped. So what do we do with these torpedo cards then?
First of all, torpedo cards can still be equipped to subs to increase their attack. This would be like a sub firing more than 1 torpedo at a ship during combat. Smaller torpedoes would be fired encapsulated from the tubes just like Harpoons get fired from subs. The subs would still gain the attack bonus written on the card as normal.
However, since with the rule change, players will no longer need a torpedo card to intercept subs, torpedoes will now be used to increase the equipped ship's attack power while intercepting attacking subs. The new wording on the cards will simply be "Equipped surface ship has +XATK intercepting subs" where X is the attack number on that line of the card.
