Even though the game itself is being sold as a Cube game, there are also a few alternate formats we would like to promote with players. Here are a list of current and future supported formats:
1. "Standard" Constructed
The first big format we would like to promote is a constructed format that we are calling "Standard." Rules mechanics for this format will be exactly the same as the cube game however with the following deck construction rules.
a) Players will be able to use any cards available in the core set, as well as future expansions including NATO vs. the Blok.
b) Constructed decks will be limited to no more than 3 copies of any card in the game besides basic resources which you can use any number you wish.
c) Deck size requirements will be no less than 40 cards in your main library, between 15 and 25 cards in your resource library, and upto a 15 card sideboard.
d) Players will not be required to play any basic resources in their resource library unless they choose to, players may play 25 non-basic resources if they wish.
e) Players will be able to play 1 on 1 or multiplayer free-for-all style games.
f) Sideboard rules: Players may add or substitute cards between main deck and sideboard between games, as long as the main deck doesn't go below 40 cards.
If there are enough players in locals to play the Standard format, there will be a league setup to allow players to compare decks, play styles and compete in tournaments.
2. Allied Nations
Allied nations, not to be confused with the new Allies mechanic in the first expansion, is similar to "Two Headed Dragon" in Magic: The Gathering. Players will be able to play in teams of 2 using constructed decks or the cube game. Here will be the official rules for this format:
a) Players will team up against other Allied Nations teams in a 2 on 2 battle.
b) Each team of players will take their turns at the same time, play resources, build and deploy units to their own flagship and battlefield.
c) Players will not be allowed to deploy weapons or aircraft to their partners ships.
d) Players flagships will still start at 20 hit points and each player will be responsible for their own life.
e) Partner players will have the ability to defend for each other if one partner doesn't have the proper units to intercept attacking units.
f) Teams will win the game by eliminating both of their opponents' flagships or forcing them both to forfeit the game by the standard means.
The following are future formats we will support and will be creating new cards in conjunction with these formats. These future formats are as follows:
3. Dreadnought
The Dreadnought format will be similar to the "Archenemy" format in Magic: The Gathering. This will be a 3 on 1 style where the Dreadnought player will start with 40 hit points and have a special deck of cards they will activate from during their upkeep step. These cards will consist of different affects, weapons and buffs that will benefit the Dreadnought player or hinder the other players.
4. Fleet Admiral
The Fleet Admiral format will be similar to "Commander (EDH)" in Magic: The Gathering short of one major difference. Instead of using a legendary ship card as your "General", you will use a legendary fleet admiral card that will be introduced in a future expansion that will feature 5 new card subtypes under the new "Personal" card type. Details on this format will be revealed when this expansion is introduced.
Share your comments on this as I would love to hear what everyone thinks of these additions to the game. If anyone has any suggestions on other formats players might be able to play please comment.
